India has been experiencing a magnificent growth in all kinds of industries and is currently counted among major economic powers of the world. The credit for this healthy growth rate must go to the globalization and liberalization of Indian economy. The higher education sector in India needs a special mention here due to its growing demand sparked off by the extraordinary emergence of the outsourcing business. The entire range of education is witnessing the setup of best institutes across the country. The most noteworthy among them are the top management colleges and universities that provide Master in Business Administration or MBA through high-class infrastructure, knowledgeable faculty, and up-to-date courses of study. Various top MBA colleges in India are known for offering regular programs, part-time programs, executive programs and distance learning courses.

There is no doubt that the top-ten list of MBA colleges in India is dominated by 6 Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) situated in cities like Ahemedabad, Bangalore, Kolkata, Indore, Kozhikode and Lucknow. There is also another one established in Shillong. Two new IIMs located in Ranchi and Rohtak will commence their first session this year. The admission process for these institutes is carried out through the Common Admission Test (CAT), group discussions and finally, personal interviews. Students generally pursue two-year, full-time Post Graduate Programmes in management, computer-aided management, software enterprise management, public policy and management, and agri-business management. The IIMs have entered into strategic alliances with other prestigious B-schools in the world. All these institutes have tremendous reputation in pioneering education, research and consultancy.

Beyond the dominance of IIMs, there is Xavier Labour Research Institute (XLRI), founded in Jamshedpur in the year 1949. This eminent institute offers two 2-year, full-time programmes, namely Post Graduate Diploma in Business Administration (equivalent to an MBA degree), and Post Graduate Diploma in Personnel Management (equivalent to an MBA in human resources. The courses of study put much more stress on developing the theoretical and analytical knowledge of domestic and international business. Various specialized subjects include general business administration, personnel management and industrial relations, finance, economics, information systems, and sales and marketing management. XLRI conducts its own entrance exam called the XAT.

The Faculty of Management Studies (FMS) under the University of Delhi is among top MBA colleges in India. The institute offers both regular and part-time MBA programs with subjects such as financial management, strategic management, economics, healthcare administration, service management and computer applications. The admission into this college is done through a written entrance examination. Students studying in FMS involve themselves in a monitored summer training program with a business concern. Its part-time program is very flexible as students can complete the course in 3 years.

SP Jain Institute of Management and Research in Mumbai is another premier B-school in the country. Students can pursue a two-year Post Graduate Diploma in Management in this college. Various specialized subjects comprise information technology, finance, marketing and operations. The institute doesn’t have its own entrance test and accepts qualified candidates of CAT, XAT, or GMAT.

There are other notable MBA colleges in India like Indian School of Business (ISB) in Hyderabad, the Institute of Management Technology (IMT) in Ghaziabad, Management Development Institute (MDI) in Gurgaon and Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies (JBIMS) in Mumbai. For MBA in distance learning, the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) is the best choice available for students and working executives.
